PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear IBASD members & associate members. Before this year fly’s by, I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation in having the opportunity to serve as President of IBA San Diego. I began sitting on the board in 2004 and have chaired the annual golf tournament for the past three years. This experience has given me an opportunity to meet a lot of you and make friendships that will last a life time. I am blessed to serve with a board of dynamic individuals who volunteer their time and support to this great association and its members’ interests.

I want to thank each of you for your support of IBA San Diego’s events throughout the year. Our attendance at I-Day and the golf tournament are second to none in California. Our annual holiday party / fund raiser is a huge success every year & our young agent events are thriving. Your support has allowed us to raise a substantial amount of money for various charities including The Burn Institute, Operation Homefront, The Polinsky Childrens Center, San Diego Center for Children, and The National Lung Cancer Partnership to name a few. In addition, our donations to IBA West (IBAiPac), have helped to support their advocacy efforts to protect the interest of our members in Sacramento.

During this difficult time in the economy, when agencies are looking for areas in which to cut costs, I want to thank you for renewing your membership with IBA. I would highly encourage you to log onto www.ibawest.com and take a moment to learn more about what this organization does on your behalf. Believe me, your dues make a difference!

See you at the next IBASD event.

Sincerely,

— John Toon
IBA San Diego's President 2009

YBA in San Diego

On a day where the clocks had changed, the early morning wake up alarm made it difficult initially to get out of bed and get moving. However, once we arrived to the Location of the walk in downtown San Diego, all the tiredness seemed to wither away. The Lungevity foundation had expected initially around 400 people overall. To their surprise, over 1000 people were in attendance for this event on March 8th so support lung Cancer research. The San Diego Young agents group had almost 20 on the team. In addition to showing up and walking this team raised $1500 and still counting. The sun peaked out to warm and otherwise cold day, and the walk along the waters of San Diego was very nice. A big thank you goes out to all those who participated, either in donation or in attendance. The San Diego Young Agents our currently working to come up with the next event that is possibly going to be our 2nd Annual Casino night. Look for more to come in the future.

— Joe Hamilton,
2009 YBA Chairman

Legislation:

One of the IBA’s greatest benefits to you, its membership, is its continuing fight to bring our industry issues and legislative positions on numerous matters to our Congressional members and their leadership. Here is a synopsis of the recent announcement concerning the sunset of the NFIP legislation.

I sincerely hope that you will continue to support the IBA, especially with the new leadership on the various subcommittees and in the House and Senate, because their efforts are directly impacting our industry’s future and our ability to earn a live living!

The National Flood Insurance Program would be extended for six months with no changes in structure, under provisions included in a $410 billion omnibus appropriations bill set for floor debate later this week. The short-term extension, through Sept. 30, would push debate over the program's long-term future -- including whether it should begin offering a "multiperil" policy that also includes windstorm coverage -- to this summer. Without an extension, statutory authority for the 40-year-old NFIP would expire March 6, along with the rest of a $487.7 billion continuing resolution passed in September.

Separate bills that each would have extended the program for five years passed the House in October 2007 and the Senate in May of this year. But progress stalled on resolving differences between the two bills, including provisions of the House bill empowering the NFIP to begin offering windstorm coverage through optional personal and commercial multiperil policies. Other changes would have phased out some premium subsidies, raised the NFIP's maximum coverage limits for the first time since 1994 and introduced coverage of additional living expenses, business interruption, and finished basements.

"The Big I is pleased to see that an NFIP extension through Sept. 30 is included," said Charles Symington, senior vice president of government affairs with the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America. "This program, which is so important to thousands of consumers across the country, cannot be allowed to lapse."

The Big I is having its Annual Legislative Conference in Washington from April 29th to May 1st if anyone would like to join in this great event where we meet with our legislators!

Best regards, Jeff Gearhart
