ANNOUNCEMENTS

Southwestern College Insurance Program

IBA San Diego has been invited to be an industry partner with Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California. Judy King, immediate Past President attended the Advisory Committee meeting on June 3rd, 2008 at Southwestern College where partners in the fields of insurance and finance discussed future plans for the Associate in Science Degree in Insurance, as well as, the Associate in Finance. Insurance classes for the insurance degree commenced in the fall of 2007 and classes for the new finance degree will commence in the fall of 2008. We, at IBA San Diego, feel that graduates from both programs will be welcomed into the insurance industry. We are honored to have been selected to help find agencies willing to mentor interns, as well as, eventually help find positions for the graduates of the program. Insurance education and basic business classes will provide future graduates with the ability to find excellent jobs within the San Diego insurance community. If you are interested in learning more about the program and might wish to one day mentor one of the interns, please contact me for more details.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear IBASD members and associate members. I think it's time to express my gratitude in being elected President of this fine organization. It is a large responsibility that I do not take lightly. I started with IBASD in 2003 as a board member. At that time I was "volunteered" as the chairperson for the Holiday Party. I was a little nervous about the assignment.but I looked forward to it just the same. I took on the job and became very fond of the charities I was able to work with. I am very proud of the members and associate members of this organization. Together we were able to raise a little more than $80,000 for San Diego Charities in the years I was chairing the Holiday Party.

I also came to realize (over the last five years) that we had a great group of presidents to this organization that made a lot of very good things happen. Past Presidents like Bob Captain, Gayle Bailey, Brad Wilson, Steve Shea and Judy King all gave their best to make this a successful organization during my time on the board. Things started to change under their leadership. San Diego's I-Day has become the best attended in the state. The golf tournament is now so successful that we have to turn people away because the course won't hold that many players. Our political action efforts (through donations to IBA west and grass roots efforts) have helped stop legislation that would have been harmful to our industry and our customers. Our new young agents group has held functions that draw crowds of 100 or more.

These past Presidents and board members have done a great job in making this organization a big success. The course they have set is a good one and all I need to do is keep the helm pointed in the right direction. There are challenges ahead and together we will meet them and prevail. Thank you all for your confidence and I will see you at the next IBASD event.

Sincerely,

— Scott Sherman
IBA San Diego's President 2008

COMMITTEE REPORTS

IBA San Diego Golf Tournament

The 2007 IBA San Diego golf tournament was another smashing success. Mark your calendars for our golf tournament in 2008. The event will be held at Maderas Golf Club on Friday November 14th. Registration forms will follow in the next few weeks. Don't delay in getting your registration in as the tournament has consistently filled up at least 30 days in advance for the past few years. Maderas is a beautiful course. There will be great giveaways, prizes, and plenty of cold beverages!

I-Day Committee Report

IBA SAN DIEGO “I” DAY, MAY 13th, 2008

San Diego, CA - Once again I Day was another huge success. This year we had well over 600 attendees and 95 exhibitor booths with several others on the waiting list. I would like to thank our Grand Sponsor Monarch E&S Insurance Services for their support as well as ICW Group, Golden Eagle, and the many other sponsors. The CE was a huge success! Many thanks to the panel of speakers: Paul Hering, CEO of Barney and Barney, LLC, Mike Miller, CEO of One Beacon Ins. Co., Mike McCall, Exec. V.P. of Swett & Crawford, and Rob Reader, Managing Director of Guy Carpenter Reinsurance. Peter W. Griffith with C.Lee Williams did a wonderful job as moderator of this session.

This year's theme was “Soaring into the Future”. Our guest speaker, Larry Himmel from News 8, did an outstanding job of providing first hand insight on the 2007 wildfires while injecting some comedic relief. The Pearl Harbor Survivors kept patriotism alive and well with their presentation of the colors. Our Agent of the Year is Joe Hamilton from Hal Rakowski Insurance. Joe has generated new interest in The Young Agents of San Diego with two well attended events. Our Insurance Professional of the Year went to Tiffany Thompson of Allied Insurance while the Associate Member of the Year went to Julie Brown from San Diego Insurance Staffing. Also, the San Diego Insurance Women's group awarded Pam Holt from Hatter, Williams, and Purdy with the Insurance Woman of the Year.

Without all of the attendees, sponsors, and volunteers this event would not have been possible. Thank you again for your support!

— Byron Johnston,
IBA of San Diego 2008 I DAY Chairman

A Successful Year for Young Agents of San Diego!

Young Brokers and Agents from San Diego have come out in big numbers this year in an effort to network with their peers as well as enjoy some time out of the office. After a few year sabbatical, San Diego had revived its Young Agents group in order to have some excellent events for young agents to meet other professionals in the insurance industry as well as grow their own books of business. In November of 2008, this newly revived group held its first event at Dave and Busters in San Diego sponsored by Golden Eagle Insurance and drew a crowd of over 100 guests. Young agents and Insurance professionals were able to discuss some of the stories following the Wild fires that had recently taken place. This was a perfect opportunity to learn from those who have been in the business as well as share some of the successes and tribulations of that traumatic event.
The second event in March of 2008 was a casino night where guests could mingle, try their hand at some table games, as well as possibly win some prizes at the end of the night. This event was graciously sponsored by Monarch E&S.
The Young Agents of San Diego are looking to host another event coming up in the fall. It looks as if we will be going back to Dave and Busters for the next event. Please watch for emails to be coming soon as we will get that information out as soon as it is available.

Dear fellow members! Please MARK your calendars!!!

The Holiday Party is approaching and the date has been set for Friday, December 19, 2008! As usual, we will be having a celebrity host this year and the venue has been secured and promises to be one of the most enjoyable and beautiful locations in San Diego to celebrate our event!

More details will follow in the upcoming months! We will also be in need of Celebrity servers, raffle prizes and auction items from agencies, carriers, vendors and outside organizations! For those of you whom have some pull with either hotel gift packages, sports memorabilia, vacation packages, spas retreats and the like, please start making your calls in a month or two to help make this Holiday Fund Raiser the largest in our history and to secure the donation before others beat you to it!

If you have any suggestions or ideas you'd like to share with me, please do so!

— Jeff Gearhart,
Holiday Party Chair
